Drugs for the Treatment of Liver Diseases
Liver diseases may be caused by various intoxications (eg. due to the use of large quantities of drugs or alcohol which leads to toxic hepatitis), the impact of HCV on the liver (viral hepatitis B, C, D), violation of the human immune system (autoimmune hepatitis) and violation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism that can lead to fatty infiltration of the liver - steatohepatitis.
In long-term inflammation in the liver without adequate treatment the disease can progress to the stage of liver cirrhosis, and in rare cases cirrhosis of the liver progresses into a tumor (hepatocellular carcinoma).
Medicamentous therapy of the liver diseases is carried out with the following drugs:
- cholagogues (drugs that stimulate the secretion of bile and promote its excretion into the duodenum)
- hepatoprotective drugs (Essentiale Forte, Legalon). This group of drugs improves the metabolic processes in the liver, increases its resistance to pathogenic effects, accelerate the restoration of its functions in various damages
- cholelitholytic agents which contribute to the dissolution of gallstones
