Drug name: Microgynon (ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel)

Therapeutic effects:

Microgynon is a contraceptive combined estrogen-progestin medication. Its contraceptive effect develops due to several mechanisms. The drug contains a derivative of 19-nortestosterone – levonorgestrel that surpasses the activity of the corpus luteum hormone progesterone and acts at the receptor level without prior metabolic transformation. Levonorgestrel causes the blockade of LH and FSH release, inhibition of secretion of pituitary gonadotropins, which leads to inhibition of maturation and release of ready to fertilize egg (ovulation). The contraceptive effect is enhanced ethinylestradiol. Microgynon retains a high viscosity of cervical mucus making penetration of the sperm into the uterus almost impossible.
