Drug name: Brand Lamisil (tebinafine)

Therapeutic effects: Lamisil (terbinafine) is antimycotic drug with a broad spectrum of action. It acts on those fungi that affect skin, hairs and nails including dermatophytes. In low concentration, terbinafine exerts fungicidal action against dermatophytes, mold fungi and some dimorphic fungi. Activity against yeast fungus can be fungicidal and fungistatic. Action mechanism is associated with specific inhibiting of sterines biosynthesis.

Indications:

Lamisil (terbinafine) is used to treat:

• Onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes
• Mycosis of the scalp
• Fungal skin infections: dermatomycosis of the trunk, shank, foots

Lamisil is usually well tolerated and side effects are not frequently observed. Most common Lamisil side effects:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Unexplained rash
• Dyspepsia
• Increased liver enzymes
• Itching
• Taste changes
• Stomach pain
• Hives

Less common lamisil side effects include: liver damage, vision problems, skin rash, itching, hives, swelling, wheezing, low blood cells counts, vomiting, tiredness, hair loss.

Lamisil may interact with the following groups of medicines:

• Beta-blockers
• Antipsychotic medications
• Medications used for arrhythmias treatment
• ADHD medications
• ACE inhibitors
• Cold/cough product
• MAO inhibitors
• Certain antibiotics
• Serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
• Tricyclic antidepressants
• Blood thinners
• Enlarged prostate treatment
• Cancer treatment (tamoxifen)
• Amebiasis treatment
• H2-histamine receptor blockers

Cautions and restrictions:

Lamisil is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
• Kidney diseases (renal failure)
• Liver diseases (liver failure)
• HIV or cancer (conditions characterized by weakness of the immune system)
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding

Additional information:

Lamisil tablets should be stored at dry and protected from light place out of reach of children at a temperature not higher than 30°C. Shelf-life is 5 years. Do not use the medication after expiration date.
