Drug name: Doxycycline

Therapeutic effects: Doxycycline possesses bacteriostatic action which is associated with suppression of protein synthesis in the bacterial cell on ribosomal level. Doxycycline is highly effective against gram-positive and gram-negatives microorganisms, causative agents of plague, tularemia, anthrax, brucellosis, cholera, chlamydia, ricketsia.

Doxycycline does not act on proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, fungi.

Indications:

Doxycycline is used to treat:

• Respiratory tract infections
• ENT infections
• Infections of the urogenital system
• Conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis
• Infections caused by Rickettsia
• Gonorrhea and syphilis
• Cholera
• Lyme's disease
• Venereal granuloma caused by Calymmatobacterium granulomatis
• Chlamydia infections
• Brucellosis
• Chancroid caused by Haemophilus ducreуi;
• Plague ( Yersinia pestis)
• Tularemia
• Infections caused by Campylobacter fetus
• Malaria prophylaxis caused by Plasmodium falciparum
• Acne and rosacea treatment
• Treatment of periodontitis (gum disease).

Doxycycline may cause the following side effects:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Dyspepsia
• Skin reaction to sunlight (photosensitivity)
• Loss of appetite.

Less common doxycycline side effects include: blurred vision fever, headache, bloody stool, severe stomach cramps, headache, joint pain, fever, liver damages, vision changes, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, glossitis, enterocolitis, vaginal yeast infection.

Drug interactions:

Doxycycline may interact with the following groups of medicines:

• Antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, iron
• Barbiturates
• Bile-acid sequestrant cholesterol medications
• Birth control pills
• Anticonvulsants
• Oral typhoid vaccine
• Penicillins
• Retinoids
• Drugs used to treat HIV
• Oral typhoid vaccine
• Penicillins
• ACE inhibitors
• Blood thinners

Make sure to inform your doctor if you take any other prescription or over-the-counter medications

Cautions and restrictions:

Doxycycline is strictly contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

• Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
• Severe kidney and liver failure
• Porphyria
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Children under 8 years of age
• Pregnancy and lactation (Doxycycline may cause significant damage to the fetus)
• Leukopenia
• Frequent yeast infections

Additional information:

Doxycycline capsules should be stored at dry place out of reach of children. Do not store the medication in the bathroom.
