Drug name: Bactroban (mupirocin)

Therapeutic effects:

Bactroban (mupirocin) is a broad spectum antibiotic for local application. Bactroban reversibly binds to the enzyme called Isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase leading to suppression of protein synthesis in bacterial cell. In therapeutic doses the medication exerts bacteriostatic action, in high concentrations – bactericidal action. Bactroban acts on gram-positibe and gram-negative microorganism. The medication does not act on Corynebacterium, Enterobacteriaceae, Micrococcus and anaerobic bacteria.

Indications:

• Bacterial skin damages (impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, ecthyma)
• Secondary skin damages (infected dermatitis, eczema, ulcers, burns, wounds, insect bites)
• Prophylaxis of wounds infections during surgical interventions, burns, abrasion

Bactroban nasal ointment:

• Staphylococcal infections of the nasal cavity (rhinitis, nasopharyngitis)
• Carriage of staphylococcus (St. aureus)

Bactroban is not used to treat eye infections

In rare cases: allergic reactions, dry sore throat, itching and dryness at the place of application

In individual cases: systemic allergic reactions, in application of intranasal ointment – rhinitis

Drug interactions:

Bactroban may interact with other medication used locally:

• Antibitotics
• Antifungals
• Corticosteroids

Cautions and restrictions:

Bactroban is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

• Reactions of hypersensitivity to of the medication ingredients
• Pregnancy
• Breastfeeding
• Renal failure

Additional information:

Bactroban should be stored at dry place out of reach of children, at temperature not exceeding 25°C.
