Antibiotics Drugs
Antibiotics are preparation of synthetic, natural or semisynthetic origin, which suppress the development of cells, especially procariotic and protozoa.
Some antibiotics exert a powerful inhibitory effect on the growth and development of bacteria and at the same time do not affect the cells of the host organism or macroorganism, that is why they are commonly used as medical preparations.
Some antibiotics are used a cytostatics in treatment of oncological diseases.
Antibiotics do not affect viral cells, that is why they are not effective in treatment of disorders caus4ed by viruses for example flu, hepatitis A,B,C, herpes, smallpox and etc.
The mechanisms of antibiotics biological effect:
- Impairment of cellular wall synthesis in bacterial cells, through inhibition of peptidoglycane, formation of dimers and their transmissions to growing chains of peptidoglycane or synthesis of chitin. Antibiotics, which work by the mentioned mechanism exert bactericidal effect, not killing sleeping cells and cells, which do not have a cellular wall.
- Impairment of membrane functioning: violation of cellular membrane integrity, formation of ion channels, formation of complexes with ions, soluble in lipids and their transportation.
- Suppression of nucleic acids synthesis: binding to bacterial DNA and obstruction of RNA-polymerase interactions, ligation of DNA chains, enzyme inhibition.
- Impairment of intracellular protein synthesis: inhibition of activation and transportation of aminoacids, inhibition of ribosome functioning
Inhibition of respiratory enzymes
- Purine and pyrimidine synthesis inhibition
